A picture of a smashed window, behind which is a closed roll-down security door. Silver graffiti on the door, in calligraphy style, reads: 'it doesn't have to be like this. We could have it so much better'.

Fire in The Skies

On my last post of an aurora picture from the Night Images Flickr group (RSS feed at [syndicated profile] nightpix_flickr_feed), power lines were mentioned as an unfortunately-limited "available subject" when compared to the ruins shown in that photo. This picture from Flickr user "todd" demonstrates my firm belief that compositional choices can bring out the majesty in even the things we see everyday. It's just a matter of how they're viewed and presented. Don't be afraid to take another look at the world around you and see if it can be captured in a way that reframes it all anew!

1st place winner of the 1996 Photomicrography Competition, displayed as a part of Nikon's 50th anniversary celebration of their "Small World" contest, this photo from Lars Bech presents the chemotherapy drug Doxorubin (generic Doxorubicin) dissolved in a mixture of methanol and dimethylbenzenesulfonic acid (a chemical stabilizer). More of the artist's work is presented under the Nikon biography above.

Aurora at Llanthony Priory

With the solar maximum occurring right now, the Night Images Flickr group (RSS feed at [syndicated profile] nightpix_flickr_feed) is getting some amazing aurora images. This one, from George Stamets, also captures the ruins of Llanthony Priory in Wales.

From the Library of Congress, this collection of "lantern slides" from 1912 was used for announcements before and in-between film showings. The Library of Congress has an online collection of many of these LOTs - groupings of images or items based upon content type - and many of them are in the public domain.

A nighttime picture of an under-construction office building. A projector shines the words 'The Wrong Amazon Is Burning' onto it.

A picture of a ruined building; an empty hole in a wall which once held a window shows a flat view of water opposite a cloudy sky. Graffiti with an arrow pointing to the hole reads: 'FREE ROTHKO'.

Street art by OakOak. From the artist profile by I Support Street Art:

OakOak is a French carismatic [sic] artist who likes to play with urban elements. He has an eye and mind to the details most people ignore and inovates [sic] a scene with his intervention.

(For the unaware, Mark Rothko was an abstract impressionist known for covering canvases in large swaths of color. The seascape is very reminiscent of something he might have painted, as you can see via his National Gallery collection.)

WOW, an urban outdoor cathedral.

By Maxx@Night on Flickr, discovered via the [syndicated profile] nightpix_flickr_feed. Per remarks with the photograph:

This is one of my bucket list photos that I've wanted to take before I got too old. These are the crazy exchange ramps you see in Texas. Because freezing weather is rare in Central Texas, we build our highways high.

This photo was taken under Loop 1 and State highway 183 in Austin, Texas. I find the patterns and lines fascinating.

A photograph of the now-abandoned Jerma Palace Hotel in Malta. Concrete stairs ascend an open stairway, their bannisters and safety railings missing. Graffiti from several different people has been sprayed onto the stripped-bare plaster walls.

A black-and-white photo of a nuclear power plant's control room. Dials and meters are all across the walls, and a large control console arcs around the circular space. A man in a suit sits at the controls.
