On my last post of an aurora picture from the Night Images Flickr group (RSS feed at nightpix_flickr_feed), power lines were mentioned as an unfortunately-limited "available subject" when compared to the ruins shown in that photo. This picture from Flickr user "todd" demonstrates my firm belief that compositional choices can bring out the majesty in even the things we see everyday. It's just a matter of how they're viewed and presented. Don't be afraid to take another look at the world around you and see if it can be captured in a way that reframes it all anew!
1st place winner of the 1996 Photomicrography Competition, displayed as a part of Nikon's 50th anniversary celebration of their "Small World" contest, this photo from Lars Bech presents the chemotherapy drug Doxorubin (generic Doxorubicin) dissolved in a mixture of methanol and dimethylbenzenesulfonic acid (a chemical stabilizer). More of the artist's work is presented under the Nikon biography above.
With the solar maximum occurring right now, the Night Images Flickr group (RSS feed at nightpix_flickr_feed) is getting some amazing aurora images. This one, from George Stamets, also captures the ruins of Llanthony Priory in Wales.

From the Library of Congress, this collection of "lantern slides" from 1912 was used for announcements before and in-between film showings. The Library of Congress has an online collection of many of these LOTs - groupings of images or items based upon content type - and many of them are in the public domain.

(For the unaware, Mark Rothko was an abstract impressionist known for covering canvases in large swaths of color. The seascape is very reminiscent of something he might have painted, as you can see via his National Gallery collection.)

By Maxx@Night on Flickr, discovered via the nightpix_flickr_feed. Per remarks with the photograph:
This is one of my bucket list photos that I've wanted to take before I got too old. These are the crazy exchange ramps you see in Texas. Because freezing weather is rare in Central Texas, we build our highways high.
This photo was taken under Loop 1 and State highway 183 in Austin, Texas. I find the patterns and lines fascinating.
